A night of delicate and masterful playing was on display last Sunday when the Adam P.D. Trio took to the stage at Map Studio Cafe. The weekly Sunday night listings often deliver on an intimate night of impeccable jazz with the city’s up and coming musicians. However this night felt especially impressive, though perhaps it shouldn’t be surprising. Both Adam and Josh are established musicians in the Birmingham jazz scene, playing alongside the likes of Xhosa Cole and Soweto Kinch. And Joel is a seasoned jazz drummer and session musician, playing alongside many musicians in the London scene.
What stood out the most from the performance was the interplay between musicians. Their ability to react each others playing was amazing. You could see Adam staring attentively at both Josh and Joel during their solos, really listening to his fellow musicians. Josh’s solos really stole the show, with his beautifully flowing melodies accompanied by vocalisations and a cheeky grin. With Joel’s playing, he was really exploring the different sounds of the kit, in his solos. For the first tune, he focussed in on the hi-hats, really testing out all it’s sounds in isolation. And the way he played with the feel of the songs was fun; a trope that is often over used, but was done very tastefully in this performance.
Overall, it was a thoroughly enjoyable night of outstanding playing.
